So, how important exactly are clothing options/wardrobe? Simply put, they are as important as the quality of the photo itself. Those that know what a stickler I am for quality photos know that this means it is a HUGE deal!!!! I feel that too often clothing gets overlooked and the end result is a mishmash of ideas, styles, and just a boring photo! Or one that ends up with a big mistake staring you in the face every time you look at the photos. Clothing can completely change the look and feel of any photo session. I challenge you: look up family photo sessions. Do some research. I am willing to bet that the majority of the photos that catch your eye are those that are either sharply dressed, or that just have a super amazing location. Either way, clothing can make or break the feel of your session!!! Below are my own What To Wear tips and tricks.
Why in the world would that matter??? Well, why NOT? Let's face it....photo sessions are for Mom. Occasionally, I will run across a Dad that is as excited, involved and opinionated about the photography session as Mom, but those are few and far between. And no one is going to be as critical of their appearance as Mom. So....make sure she looks good! Besides, it is so much harder choosing clothes for a woman that a man:)
Why no more or less, you ask? Any more than two main colors is going to make it appear mis-mashed, a little disorganized and not as well thought out and planned. Any less, it is going to come across as boring and unintentional.
Neutrals: It is very important to start with a good base. Neutrals can help to ground bright colors, can act as a buffer in case you just CAN'T find something that matches for that ONE person, and they are classics. Neutral examples:
White, cream, tan, khaki, grey, black, brown, navy (YES, navy is a neutral)
COLORS-This is where you need to have fun! Be creative. Find two colors that compliment and are fun. But also keep in mind the colors you choose. Make sure the colors compliment your families skin tones. And most importantly, keep in mind the season of your session!!
Fall Sessions: Jewel tones, burgundy, dark purple, jade green, mustard yellow, pumpkin orange, etc.
Spring Sessions: Pastels, light pink, light yellow, mint green, lavender, etc.
Our session colors were cream (neutral), mustard yellow, and blue.
Now that you have chosen your colors, it is time to have fun!!!! Mix patterns, textures, hues, etc. I think the most mistaken opinion about colors is that it is not ok to mix and match different hues of the same color......WRONG!!! But be careful. For example, you would not want to mix pastel yellow and mustard yellow. Those are two completely different colors that just DO NOT GO!!! You can however, mix a bright blue and a dark blue. Do not match everyone and do NOT everyone wear solids!!! It is always fine to have that one person wear a solid color, but ONLY ONE!!! It is also ok for one person to wear florals, one stripes, one plaids, etc. It gives a visual interest while the colors ground and coordinate them together.
Here is a link to one of the most amazing-dressed families ever! This family hit the nail on the head with their color and clothing selections! Take notes!!!

The MOST IMPORTANT PART, and most overlooked!!! Throw on jackets, vests, jewelry, coats, boots, belts, hats, etc. This makes your outfits so much more fun and interesting and pleasing to look at. But be careful, you can overdo the accessories. Stick with 2-3 per person.
Shoes matter....PERIOD!!! I am quoting Annie Manning from Paint The Moon Photography on her opinion on footwear, because it is spot on!
"Please don't wear sneakers.....unless we're talking about some funky Converse that go with the feel of the session. The choice of shoes can make or break an outfit. Slipping on a pair of hip, distressed boots or colorful ballet flats can tie everything in together and complete the feel of the session. Think about coordinating those bright and colorful shoes with other clothing and accessories in the photo-not necessarily on the subject themselves, but rather, match little sister's bright turquoise shoes to the sweater or scarf her Mama is wearing. It ties everything together without looking too match-y, match-y. And sometimes NO shoes looks best, especially if you will be sitting or in poses where the bottom of shoes can be seen-that never looks pretty. And don't forget some funky socks to add another splash of color or personality if your overall look of the session is fun and bright."

This was so much fun! And my kids are amazing sports. You can just see their creativity and enthusiam when I present them with a new idea. I'm so lucky that (most of the time) they enjoy the sessions just as much as I do...and truly get involved in the plannning process.
I hope you all are continuing to enjoy the blogs:)

What an amazing advancement photography, and birthday sessions in particular, have made. Eight years ago, when my oldest was turning one, it never crossed our minds to have his picture made to mark the milestone. And a "cake smash" session. Who ever heard of such? (gasp) What an evolution! And to be honest, I love every bit of it. My interest in photography started long before I ever picked up my first camera. I would consistently find myself critiquing others photos (never out loud), thinking "how posed" or "how unoriginal". I never dreamed that the ideas I thought at 13 years old would come to be such a trend 15 years later. I constantly find myself challenged, trying to be more original than the last. And when it comes to my own, that effort is not lost by any means!
What a fun, fun photo shoot this ended up being!
I must say, I dreaded this day like some women dread turning 40:) It blows my mind how fast the days of the first year (and all of them, reallly) go by. As parents, we revel in every milestone and new accomplishment our little ones make. And it is so amazing to think of all the incredible things this special little guy has done. It does not seem like a whole year has gone by since I was giddy with anticipation, just waiting to see his sweet face for the first time.
LOOK AT HOW MUCH I'VE GROWN
My goal in every session I do is to capture the child....Not literally....although sometimes that does end up being the case!! But I want to capture "them": their personality, their expressions, their silliness.....all those things we love about them as parents. Let's face it, no family is perfect. No child (always) smiles on command, and no child smiles all the time for that matter. A photo session full of perfectly smililng children is great....but is that really your family? It sure isn't mine! And I was beyond thrilled to catch this little stinker making this face below. It is something he JUST started doing...this week in fact. But it is absolutely adorable, and it is so "him"!! I think I treasure this photo the most, and it will probably end up on my wall.
What one year session is complete without
CAAAAAKKKKEEEE?
Thank you all for continuing to keep up with my work! You are very very much appreciated:) Not a single comment or "like" goes unnoticed. There is a "like" button at the top of this blog as well as the link from Facebook. I would LOVE it if you would like this if you have seen it so I can keep up with how often my blog is viewed. I am still trying to decide if this is something I will continue to do. Thank you again!!!

Come Fly With Me, Let's Fly, Let's Fly Away...............
There is SO much importance to putting together the right outfit for pictures. For newborns and infants, it can be more about what you do not wear, but never the less, clothing options are essential to the look and overall outcome of a session. THE MOST important part of the outfit, and what I have begun to notice, the most overlooked part of the outfit are the ACCESSORIES!!! Have fun when selecting your clothing. Layers and accessories are so much fun and can really help bring together the whole look! Now, as a mother of three boys, you can imagine that I do not always have a lot to work with. Retailers are geared toward girls. Check out the girl selection at ANY store....it is nearly double in size to the boy section. And how many times do you see a stand alone store JUST for boys.....I can not think of one, but could name five off the top of my head right now for girls. So imagine my delight and excitement (I think I actually had to hold in a squeal) when I saw this hat. My wheels began turning immediately. And here is the outcome of that inspiration.
It's not always as easy as it looks.....getting these shots..... It can definitely be work, and equally frustrating for me and subjects at times. But the finished product is always worth the challenge.
Sweet boy!!! This is his "I'm not quite sure, but I do not think I am supposed to be taking this hat off" look. "Maybe she won't notice"......I am honestly surprised that there wasn't a very mischevious look here....
We do end up with tears occasionally, and usually a hat is the culprit...But I always try to be sensitive and not drag it out ANY longer than absolutely necessary. I would rather attempt to reshoot at another time than totally stress them out. Poor guy, I imagine it must be frustrating to be a baby sometimes. Especially one this cute!
As you can see above, and the photo with the tears, even though the session took maybe 10 minutes, we spent about 9 1/4 minutes of that time taking the hat off.....and putting the hat on...... I think at times he thought it was a game.
Below is his, "yeah.....I took it off" look:) I even see a TAD bit of exasperation......
I hope you enjoyed my first attempt at blogging. I'm considering doing this occasionally when I have a session that I would love to talk more about than the comments I post on Facebook. I know a lot of times, pictures and galleries get viewed with no feedback. If you enjoyed this post, please "like" it so I will know if there is enough interest in seeing more. I'm really intrigued as to what you ALL thought and if it would be worth the time to do it more often !!! Thank you all for your continued support of my work. You are appreciated more than you know:) Feel free to "share" this post!
**For the photogs out there, this entire session was taken with my Canon Rebel T2I, 50mm 1.8 II lens. F/1.8, ISO 400, 1/200ths of a second.
